Women’s History Month Spotlight: PreMadonna

Throughout the Pandemic, the Lockdown and all the turn of events that has crafted a new normal and varies daily I have discovered ways to be creative. To bide my time and maximize my social media and internet usage while juggling everything that life throws at me.

PreMadonna has given us an outlet to tap into our hidden and overt cooking talents. During the holiday season her videos gave us LIFE and awakened the Domestic god and goddesses in us all. Her spin on things and her routines has simplified tasks that we use to fear and loath. Her products are affordable and geared to make the time we spend crafting meals for our families enjoyable. You don’t have to break the bank for your food to look and taste like a million bucks.

This Month as we celebrate Women’s History I can not think of anyone who hasn’t brought the hustler out of her gender with her inspirational and candid look at her life. As we all acknowledge there’s no rest for the weary this woman has been on the MOVE even when the world was on pause! She is amassing a dynasty and uplifting a demographic that always holds everyone up! BLACK women.

Ms. Cicely Tyson said that the Black woman was the lowest on the rung. And our hands were stepped on by everyone on top of us. Yet we still hold on to the ladder. I am an African-American woman with a disability in America. The Mother of two sons born a generation apart! I am a survivor. I have and will always make a way because my Mother did. And hers did and hers did and hers did. But my spirit was weary.

PreMadonna inspires me on a level that makes me feel like I truly can have it ALL! You just have to believe in God and yourself, the abilities and strengths you have and go HARD for what you believe in! Get in the building and then BUY it.

She interacts with everyone(that’s how I was able to obtain her permission to write this piece) and even while raising her family and building an empire she keeps it REAL all day! She will show you how to fry oxtail, clean greens properly and roll your hair in under a minute all the while doing Lord knows WHAT behind the scenes for her brood and clientele.

This period in history is definitely one for the ages. It is a time where we can use it to showcase all of our talents and awaken the gems that may be hidden inside us. We are a Sisterhood where if we network, fellowship and LEAN on each other we can craft magic. Even if it’s just posting inspirational videos on social media while you are building your empire. Or writing about someone that motivates you so you can inspire someone else.

As I write but more importantly LIVE I THANK y’all for letting me sit in the front of the bus and listen to music with y’all when I stilll could hear. Papa used to turn the music up real loud for me too on the way to his customers to make his deliveries.  For keeping me in Ms, Goldstein’s class knowing I may have needed a different environment. For coming to my first day of Junior High school (albeit afterschool WHO does that?) For pressing my hair SO GOOD the first day of Martin. For telling me that Brooklyn Tech was a memory (I got waitlisted and didn’t want to go to Summer School to get in because I didn’t want to go there and NANA and GRANNY knew it! ) To not beat myself up over it. (Mommy is STILL MAD in Heaven❤️) To standing outside Martin with Aunt Colette and Mommy because the girls didn’t like me but the boys did!  The most important lesson I learned was to put ME FIRST! NANA you loved us ALL independently and individually. You made sure we had toiletries, pens ...

Family Ties

When you are an overachiever, successful and KiND you can’t let people drain and drag you down because they can’t RELATE. It will change your personality because you will be on sets and in rooms that you don’t belong in.  Don’t you think I KNOW that if I was docile, submissive, subservient and STUPID what my life would be LIKE? Who I would of become? Where I would of ended up?  Until RECENTLY I HONESTLY was SCARED to TELL my STORY. I STILL wasn’t READY. But being at Auntie S’s beautiful home last Christmas and her pleading with me to WRITE our STORY with her beautiful, clear Doe looking eyes that mirror my Grendmothers I KNEW I had too. Nana used to look at me the SAME way.  Because my Uncle Sam who has ALWAYS had my BACK throughout my entire life whether it be OVERJOYED I was SKIPPING a GRADE. Helping  me write my business PLAN, letting me drive his BRAND new CAR for my road test and being the FIRST one in my FAMILY including my parents that I told I was pregnant wi...

Turning the Page

Mommy and her friends at Russo’s on the Bay at a Post office reunion. Uncle Goode sent me this and boy oh boy was I startled this morning.  I see her life as a testament that you reap what you sow. It takes under ten seconds to tell anyone what you do for a living. My Mother worked in the Post office her entire career. After a brief stint as a teenager with Auntie Helen at ironically the phone company.  Choosing a federal job over the BANK! She was hired on the SPOT as a woman of color because she was a mathematical genius. Courtney inherited that trait for her. She was seventeen years old. Tour 1 like a FOOL (11pm-7am)she would say. After she began working in the Vault 7am-3pm after almost thirty years of the night shift. She was in the vault in the Post Office at JFK in NYC on September 11, 2001.  She was concerned about me getting home newly hearing impaired at MetroTech downtown Brooklyn. I love EVERYTHING about you Ma but the BEST thing was you were so GENUINE...
